Hello friends, greetings from Shareskills Trainings. Do you take decisions based on your instincts, emotions and intuitions rather than based upon practical and rational thinking? We can take example of “Love marriages” or “Stories of first generation entrepreneurs”. In each of these cases, emotional thinking has played major role rather rational thinking. Thinking rationally, most couples in love marriage are not perfect match for each other. You must be knowing success story of KFC i.e. Kentucky fried chicken where its founder Colonel Sanders was rejected 1009 times before finding a taker for his chicken recipe at age of 65! What was driving Colonel Sanders? Was it emotional or rational brain?
People always battle between logic and emotions. People logically know that they should not eat cake. They logically know it’s good to sleep and wake up early. Students know that sitting on sofa and watching TV is not going to help them in their career, but in spite of that people still do things which they are not supposed to. Is it because people are losers or weak? No, it’s not true. When there is battle between logic and emotions, emotions always win. Go at top floor of a tall building and from a room with glass window, look down and you will feel really scared!
Your logic knows that you are safe behind glass window and you can’t fall but your emotional thinking is giving you stomach ache or goose bumps and is again winning.
The Basic Principal of Brain & Its Evolution
Our brain basically has two systems:
Emotional Brain which makes us feels pain and pleasure and another is Rational Brain which analyses and plan thinking.
Our brain has not evolved to match evolution of the current society and lifestyle. We are talking about evolution of millions of years. Our brain has evolved with only one thought in mind to maximize our chances of survival. It is very much sensitive to life threats. The basic principal of our brain is safety first because if our brain does not feel safe then it can’t enjoy anything. Its default mode is something and someone is dangerous until it is proven safety. E.g. in case of relationships our brain either categorizes people into friends or foes which happens at sub conscious level. Our brain is like complex machine with 85 billion neurons in it. Hence to be efficient, the brain has to automate without thinking much.
The Fierce Battle
What basically happens is that whenever you start thinking about some choice,work or decision, then mutual battle starts between these two brains and we can’t get our desired results. Your emotional mind is like elephant – very powerful and whereas our rational mind is the like small elephant rider which directs the emotional brain. What happens in this process is elephant like big emotional brain tries to go in one direction and rider like rational brain tries to take it to other direction. In this struggle, the rational brain which is less powerful gets tired and our emotional mind wins. Example, our emotional mind wants to go and party hard in night or go for clubbing whereas our rational mind wants to study late night , read or write a book or want to work and increase the income. In this battle, rational mind with will power can control our emotional brain but whenever again our will power ends or rational brain get tired and big emotional brain takes control, this is the main reason why 90% people are not successful in their life.
How to Manage battle between Rational & Emotional Brain?
We should not be slave of our emotional brain because we have amazing rational brain. It does some unique things like it makes us think about our own thought process. There is a symbiotic relationship between rational and emotional brain. Emotional brain is biased and it takes mental shortcuts for reactions and decision making which bypasses logical reasoning brain. We as human being should rise above these biases; we should use our rational brain to review our decisions and drivers behind our behaviors, so we will not be slave of the emotional brain.
In ancient times mostly stress used to be externally generated but now it is mostly internally generated. Our brain is going to react with fight or flight mode for stress, even we are not fighting or running away from wild animal. It’s still going to react in same way. We need to manage this. Most of our stress is caused due to our perceptions. Stress affects our brain. If you perceive your stress, which is out of your control, you will feel like you are hopeless or weak. Stress can physically decrease the capacity, functionality and even size of rational brain. Stress weakens control of rational brain on emotional brain. We can work around our perceptions, mind set. We can take other people perspectives. We should focus directly on strengthening logical brain. Mindfulness meditation is best tool for that. Since 1000s of years it’s helping millions of people and it is creating balance in life. You may also do physical exercise and it has beneficial effect on rational brain with natural chemicals.
How to Integrate Brains for Our Wellness?
If there is battle between emotional and rational thinking, then you can win this by making it better with better emotions. You can make your life phenomenal, extraordinary or wonderful by always using emotions to defeat emotions. Imagine yourselves with better and more powerful emotions and excite your imagination. Make your emotions more powerful with exciting language and now you can win. Use stronger, better and more compelling emotions to get everything you want in life.
So, what is the secret of success in terms of emotional and rational brain? Friends, if you want to become successful, then you have to direct your rational and emotional brain in same direction. For that you should associate or connect your goal with a stronger emotion, then only your emotional mind will work in your favor and will accept every direction by rational mind. Remember life is only about 10% what happened with you and 90% how you react on it.
Although there are technological advances, still we are at mercy of our emotional brain. If we can create some social awareness or self awareness about this and how to manage this, then it will be a good sociological progress as technological progress for future generations.
